Angkor Wat is one of the most famous of the ruins in the Angkor Archaeological Park. It is located just 6km North of Siem Reap making it the closest of the major temples to the town, and is also considered to be one of, if not the most breathtaking of all the ruins.
Pre Rup is a fascinating Hindu site, which consists of an architecturally and artistically advanced temple-mountain. Pre Rup was constructed in the late 10th century during the reign of Rajendravarman II and is located several kilometres East of Angkor Thom.
East Mebon is a Hindu 'temple mountain' constructed in the late 10th century by Rajendravarman in classic Pre Rup Khmer style. East Mebon is located a few km East of Angkor Thom, and boasts three large levels which are crowned by five towers.
Ta Som is a Buddhist affiliated temple constructed in typical Bayon style during the reign of King Jayavarman VII in the late 12th century. It is located in the far North-East corner of the Angkor Archaeological Park. This temple consists of a small plaza-like complex with a few face tower gopuras and carvings throughout.
Neak Pean is a Buddhist temple located North-East of the walls of Angkor Thom. It was constructed in the late 12th century by Jayavarman VII, and is one of the most stunning sites of the Angkor Archaeological Park.
Preah Khan, literally meaning 'sacred sword', is a huge complex littered with carvings and passages. It is a favourite for photographers as you can easily spend several hours here before exhausting the different photo opportunities.
Angkor Thom, also known as 'Big Angkor' is a large ancient city within the Angkor Archaeological Park, which was constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries. The city was constructed by the late king Jayavarman VII after he recaptured the Angkorian capital from the Cham invaders.
Bayon is an absolutely monolithic Buddhist temple located in central Angkor Thom, being one of the two largest within the walls. ( Angkor Wat being the other) It was constructed in the late 12th century by Jayavarman VII. Bayon is one of the most recognisable of the Angkor ruins, and has had many art pieces based on it.
Baphuon is a large Hindu temple located within the walls of Angkor Thom. It was constructed by Udayadityavarman II in the mid 11th century as the state temple of the time. The temple stands 34m tall, and 120m x 100m at the base.
