Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is one of the most famous of the ruins in the Angkor Archaeological Park. It is located just 6km North of Siem Reap making it the closest of the major temples to the town, and is also considered to be one of, if not the most breathtaking of all the ruins. This is due to the fact that Angkor Wat is such a large structure

which is still in fairly good condition. Angkor Wat is a Hindu temple which resembles a massive three-tiered pyramid type building which has five large towers stemming from the top which resemble lotus flowers due to the layering. The Khmer styled temple was erected by late Suryavarman II dedicated to the Hindu God 'Vishnu'. The temple is surrounded by a wall and moat, much like Angkor Thom although not as big, and the temple itself spans over 1kmsq. You can expect to spend 2 or more hours here but make sure to visit in the afternoon to ensure the best lighting for viewing of the temple.
