Angkor Thom

Angkor Thom, also known as 'Big Angkor' is a large ancient city within the Angkor Archaeological Park, which was constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries. The city was constructed by the late king Jayavarman VII after he recaptured the Angkorian capital from

the Cham invaders in the early 12th century, and covers an area of over 9kmsq.  This construction was part of a larger 'building campaign' across the Angkorian empire. He began with existing structures such as Baphuon, Bayon and Phimeanakas and built a large stone wall around them and added a moat. There are 5 entrances to the city, marked by 5 large gate structures each with 4 large stone faces. The walls are typically Bayon style which is in turn essentially classic Khmer architecture. Angkor Thom is one of the largest ancient structures in the Siem Reap province, and is a must-visit for anybody travelling the area and visiting the park, especially because of the large number of monuments that lie inside its walls. (13 to be exact) Considering the large number of monuments that this city posesses, it is recommended to allow a whole day to explore the insides of the ancient city, and it can be visited all year round.
