Soieries du Mekong

At the very heart of an ancestral know-how, Soieries du Mékong draws its wealth from an encounter with Cambodian weavers. Their exceptional technical skills associated to French elegance, make Soieries du Mékong scarves fashion pieces of rare finesse and beauty. A silk fibre with an irresistible touch, contemporary and modern colours, each scarf is entirely hand woven and each irregularity is the mark and warrant of a unique product.

Patience, precision, finesse…between 8 to 12 hours of work is required to weave a scarf. An exceptional know-how, by which the weaver arranges up to 14 000 metres of silk for a unique feel.

Social Mission:

Soieries du Mékong was created in 2001 from the encounters of two NGO’s: Enfants du Mékong and Espoir en Soie. Together, they decided to help disadvantaged women in Banteay Chhmar, a rural area in the North West of Cambodia, by promoting their professional integration while enhancing the ancestral knowledge of hand-weaving silk.

Today, 50 weavers, seamstresses and employees in Banteay Chhmar have sustainable jobs, regular salaries and good working conditions to support their families, thereby limiting the rural exodus. In total, approximately 300 people (men, women and children – including 100 children attending school) enjoy better living conditions thanks to this project.

Know-How:

For the past 17 years, Soieries du Mékong has promoted women’s empowerment and trained approximately one hundred women in the art of hand weaving.

In 2009, the meeting with Sophie Hykes, a French designer, was a turning point for the company. As a weaving expert, Sophie brought her touch to our new collections, combining French style with the traditional art of hand-weaving.

Soieries du Mékong, above all, combines an exceptional ancestral tradition with the artistic and technical skills of our French stylist.
