Khmer Temples in Isan, Thailand

At its apogee, the Khmer empire was as big as current Thailand, Cambodia, part of Laos and Vietnam, much bigger than Cambodia alone nowadays.

You can still find well maintained khmer empire temples in those other countries, and it offers a totally different experience, less touristic of course than Siem Reap and its surroundings, and sometimes really bucolic, as it is in the Isan region of Thailand, 6 hours east of Bangkok, near the border with Cambodia, and not too far from Siem Reap by road.

Arte, the European french/german TV channel, just broadcasted a nice documentary about it, so if you understand french or german, please have a look, you will definitely want to travel there after that!
